It's been close to ten years since Manu Chao gave the career of Amadou & Mariam a serious boost producing 'Un Dimanche A Bamako'. From that formula - Amadou & Mariam united with a number of artists from the Western pop and rock scene - the Malian duo has never strayed since and 'Folila', "music" in Bambara, once again features guests aplenty. Sometimes that works like a charm ('Dougou Badia' feat. Santigold, 'Metemya' feat. Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters) but other efforts sound like a cut and paste job ('Wari' feat. Amp Fiddler, 'Mogo' feat. Bertrand Cantat, a collaboration that left yours truly somewhat in dubio, as the lead singer of French band Noir Désir was convicted for the accidental homicide of his wife, French actress Marie Trintignant). A bit in a category of its own, but no less infectious, beautiful and touching is 'Chérie' for which the duo got the support of a Malian children's choir. Those who enjoyed 'Un Dimanche A Bamako' and its successor 'Welcome To Mali', will also like the vibes on 'Folila', but the novelty factor has worn off.
