Like Klavan Gadje, Amariszi is also a Dutch band putting its own largely Dutch-speaking spin (besides in the Dutch, Merel Simons also sings in French and English on 'Nine Balkans Nights') on the gypsy genre. And like Klavan Gadje's 'Harrejasses Hotel', 'Nine Balkan Nights' also appears on the I-C-U-B4-T sub-label of Music & Words. 'Nine Balkans Nights' has turned out quite the adventure for Amariszi and that both musically and financially. In the summer of 2013 Amariszi toured Bulgaria (where they worked with ex-Le Mystére Des Voix Bulgares singer Galina Durmushliyska and Oratnitza, a band that was already featured on these pages a while back), Macedonia and Hungary for three weeks and the songs for 'Nine Balkan Nights', a mixture of live recordings and studio sessions, were all recorded on location. For the financing of the album Amariszi decided to call on their fans, trying to entice them to make a contribution to their crowdfunding campaign. Don't just expect Balkan music on 'Nine Balkan Nights' either, because the album just as easy offers influences from swing jazz ('More Than Flowers'), reggae ('Sunny Lake') and even a hint of French musette.
