Everyone was expecting this new Anthony Cruz (born Rohan Smith and a cousin of the much too early departed Garnet Silk) album to be released on the 5th Element label, but it is ultimately Jet Star/Charm that takes the cup. 'Mama's Blessing' is a solid lovers rock album and reggae fanatics will easily recognize half a dozen well-known riddims: there's 'Woman I Love' on the Cry Baby riddim, 'If You're Not The One' on Culture's 'See Them A Come' and the anti-violence-statement 'No Gun A Dance' on the classic Real Rock riddim. The floor killer of this album is without the slightest doubt 'Too Bloody', a duet with Buju Banton over Gregory Isaacs' delicious Hard Drugs riddim. For those who haven't yet discovered him: time to put your stereo in Cruz-control!
