The fact Aurelio Martinez (shortened to Aurelio by Real World Records) dedicates his new album to Andy Palacio, should come as no surprise. Palacio was Aurelio's mentor and the flag-bearer of Garifuna music and in the relatively small Garifuna community his sudden death is still not fully processed. More important might be that Aurelio partly recorded 'Laru Beya' ("on the beach") in Senegal. In 2009 Youssou N'Dour chose Aurelio as his protégé for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. During his stay in Dakar Martinez also got to know the members of Orchestra Baobab and vocalists Rudy Galindo and Balla Sidibé feature on two songs on 'Laru Beya'. Our favorite song on 'Laru Beya' is 'Ineweyu', a duet with Njaaya, a young Senegalese singer from the local neo soul and hip-hop scene and, where yours truly is concerned, the real discovery on this album.
