Even though the name Bako Dagnon won't ring many bells in Europe yet, in her homeland Mali she belongs to the most respected griots (the late Ali Farka Touré was a big fan). The fact we in Europe are getting to know her music and voice only now, is largely because for several years Bako chose to follow the traditional path of the griot and thus only performed for specific families and patrons. After long negotiations, Ibrahim Silla, who had collected recordings from the best griots in Mali for the 2003 compilation album 'Mandekalu', managed to convince her to record an album. It still took until 2007 before her debut album, 'Titati', finally saw the light though and now she presents this successor, 'Sidiba'. Dagnon has a rough sometimes almost male sounding voice giving her music extra power and energy.
