For 'Artifacts', the second long player by Brussels based Ethio-jazz ensemble Black Flower, front man Nathan Daems (flute, sax) drew inspiration from a trip to Greece where he travelled to become more proficient in playing the ney. As was the case with 'Abyssinia Afterlife', Nathan also wrote a wonderful dreamscape to illustrate 'Artifacts'; a story that in many ways compliments the one accompanying its predecessor. With the title of the album Daems refers to: "…century-old fragile artifacts or tools that served as a basis for the development of human culture and without which the present would look completely different." As we're true reggae aficionados, of course our attention was drawn by the excellent dubby title track 'Artifacts' (and 'Helios Victor' is of the same order), but the rest of the tracks on 'Artifacts' could also convince. Be sure to check the out the delicious opener 'Bones' floating along one a mesmerizing washint-melody, or the relaxed Ethio-lounge of 'High Upon The Mountain High Upon The Hill'. Black Flower remains a force to be reckoned with!
