What Gotan Project did for nuevo tango, Bossacucanova does for bossa nova, mixing the genre with modern electronics, jazz and soul. Because bossa nova last year entered its 50th anniversary, there is now 'Ao Vivo', a CD + DVD recording of a concert in Rio's famous Canecão concert hall followed by some so-called "apartment sessions" (legend has it that the bossa nova originated in the apartment of singer Nara Leão where many bossa nova musicians of the first hour like João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim gathered). For this birthday concert the band saved expense nor effort and a whole range of guests were invited including bossa nova legends like Carlos Lyra, Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal (father of Bossacucanova's Márcio Menescal) redoing classics like 'The Girl From Ipanema' (here 'Garota De Ipanema') and 'Samba De Verão'.
