August 18th marks the sixth anniversary of the sudden passing of Culture front man Joseph Hill. Glancing over the band's history and releases, it's only evident VP Records/17 North Parade add Culture to their Reggae Anthology series. As with previous releases in this series (Sugar Minott, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown…) this is once again a double album with added bonus-DVD and it is especially that last disc that caught our attention. The DVD not only contains a never-before released nearly two-hour concert from 2003, the absolute icing on the cake is a thirty minute interview with Joseph Hill recorded at the BBC's radio studios by Mark Lamarr. The man, who, with a few clever comments, put an end to Shabba Ranks' international career, here, with an almost touching adoration, interrogates his roots-idol Joseph Hill, who, in turn, seems to deliberate each answer as if his life depends on it; an intriguing piece of archive footage to say the least! VP Records also put an effort in where the track list of the two CDs is concerned: the first disc includes a full version of the 'Africa Stand Alone' album (this self-produced album from 1978 has a track list that is quite similar to the better known 'Louder Than The Rest' album Culture recorded for Sonia Pottinger, but musically sounds a lot rougher and tighter) and the second offers a number of well-known Culture tracks in the version recorded for the legendary John Peel's radio show in 1982. All in all, reasons aplenty to acquire 'Natty Dread Taking Over'!
