'Appia Kwa Bridge', the new album by Ebo Taylor, opens with 'Ayesama', a stunner of an afrobeat/highlife song setting the tone for the rest of the album. With the backing of Berlin's Afrobeat Academy, Tony Allen and Africa 70 guitarist Oghene Kologbo this project could hardly have gone wrong. The title of the album refers to a bridge in Ebo's hometown Saltpond: "It's a tiny bridge in the town where people meet, where lovers get together.". With the songs on 'Appia Kwa Bridge' Taylor reportedly wanted to give his listeners a vintage highlife feel. 'Barrima', the last song in the track list, is an exception; this acoustic song is an ode to Ebo's wife who passed away in the summer of 2011 and was recorded in one take on the last day of the recording process.
