Flo (born Floriana Cangiano), is a singer-songwriter from Naples and with 'D'Amore E Di Altre Cose Irreversibili' ("about love and other irreversible business") presents her album debut. As influences Flo cites names of female singers like Billie Holiday, Elis Regina, Amalia Rodrigues and Cesaria Evora. Rodrigues is still considered the Queen of Portuguese fado, while Evora was granted the same status in the morna genre and both genres are represented on 'D'Amore E Di Altre Cose Irreversibili': 'O Ponto Mais A Sul' is a nice tribute to fado and 'Meu Tempo Melhor' whisks the listener away to Cape Verde. In addition to Portuguese, on 'D'Amore E Di Altre Cose Irreversibili' Flo can also be heard in Spanish ('Para Que Tu Me Oigas', 'Santa Lluvia'), Catalan ('Olor A Lluna') and French ('Ça Ne Tient Pas La Route'), but Flo is Neapolitan so the album of course also contains tracks in her native language Italian: 'Pirati A Palermo' is a heartrendingly beautiful poem by Sicilian poet Ignazio Buttittathat, already set to music by Rosa Levi in the nineteen sixties, and with 'Presentimento', a Neapolitan traditional by E. A. Mario, Flo pays homage to her hometown. Asked about her debut album Flo comments: "I have always wanted my first album to have a passion-driven, pulsating flavor, just like an old letter coming from a distant country that would talk about the taste of forgotten experiences. I was looking for a sound from an imaginary south, like Garcia Marquez's Macondo, a sort of ideal place.", and where yours truly is concerned, she succeeded with flying colors!
