For yours truly a new Gentleman release is always something to look forward to. What immediately sets 'New Day Dawn' apart from earlier Gentleman releases is the fact it's his first album without guests (something the German singjay got known for). 'New Day Dawn' continues where Gentleman left off with 'Diversity' and the track list is a mixture of one drop, dancehall and even dance riddims. As far as yours truly is concerned, Gentleman is one of the few artists that can actually get away with a hodgepodge of styles like that, but not everyone shares that opinion as this kind of music is also described as being "euro trash reggae". Gentleman wrote the majority of the songs on 'New Day Dawn' together with his trusty sidekick Daddy Rings and production-wise collaborated, among others, with his drummer Giuseppe Coppola and Ben Bazzazian (also involved in 'Diversity'). Exception in the track list is 'Closer To The Light', a song Gentleman wrote and produced with Alborosie. Gentleman is still the king of melancholic reggae (in 'Memories' he summarizes it nicely: "it's funny how memories don't leave like people do...") and 'You Remember', a gripping song about the times before Facebook, Twitter and YouTube is a fine example. Our personal pick from the track list is 'Another Drama', inspired by the events in Egypt (the liner notes feature a big picture of Cairo's Tahrir square). As usual, Gentleman once again released two versions of the album: a twelve songs counting basic version and a deluxe edition with 5 extra tracks.
