Although officially a Chinese band, all the members of Hanggai hail from the Autonomous Region of Inner-Mongolia and their music is strongly rooted in Mongolian tradition. Front man Ilchi is an ex-punk who rediscovered the old music traditions of his people (like hoomei or overtone singing) and now mixes them with influences from Western genres like rock ('Uruumdush') and country ('Yuan Thing Cap'). 'Juan Zou De Ren' ("he who travels far") is Hanggai's second album and sounds a lot rougher than their debut 'Introducing Hanggai'. Certainly not an album to everyone's taste, but an interesting introduction to a music culture of which we still know very little in the West.
