Yours truly had honestly never heard of Hi Kee, nor of the English Truesounds label, on which his debut album now appears, for that matter. With 'Self Reliance' the young singjay from Saint Elizabeth signs for one of the first surprises of 2011; as a matter of fact, backed by European riddim suppliers like House of Riddim, Downsound Records or The Scrucialists, Hi Kee delivers an album that could easily make this year's top ten. Check out the beautiful 'Babylon Your System Collapse', a collaboration with Luciano and Brigadier Jerry. Because a number of well-known riddims were used for 'Self Reliance' ('Refugee', a great duet with Sophia Squire on the Tek A Train riddim, 'Stress Free' on the Kokoo riddim, 'Goodness Gracious' on the Kings Highway riddim...) the album also sounds highly recognizable. Absolute must!
