Jaqee, of Ugandan descent but nowadays residing in Sweden, has already amassed quite a diverse discography. When her debut album 'Blaqalixious' was still full of soul and r&b, then for successor 'Nouvelle Amour' (entirely in French) she chose for bluesy rock and on 'A Letter To Billie Holiday', an ode to the great Billie Holiday, she successfully experimented with jazz. Jaqee clearly has more than one string on her bow, a fact about which she says: "I never wanted to be limited to one genre, as long as the vibes are right, anything goes!" For her new album, 'Kokoo Girl' Jaqee once again explored a new genre. This time she worked with Teka, producer of the German Rootdown Records label (see also Sebastian Sturm). Vocally Jaqee sounds somewhat like Macy Gray and on 'Kokoo Girl' she serves a fresh mix of ska and reggae with a poppy sauce. Recommended!
