When Jimmy Cliff met Tim Armstrong (founder and guitarist of punk rock band Rancid) in the Hollywood Sound Factory studio back in 2011, there was an immediate chemistry. The first five songs that emerged during those sessions ended up on the 'Sacred Fire' EP (Collective Sounds, 2011), but all involved longed for more and the result is 'Rebirth', a title you can take literally as on this album Jimmy Cliff once again sounds like he did in the heydays of 'The Harder They Come'. In 'Reggae Music' Cliff manages to paint his life story in a few simple strokes ("Nineteen sixty-two Orange Street Kingston Jamaica, I sang my song to Leslie Kong...") and 'One More' almost sounds like a musical testament: "I got one more song I must sing… I got one more story to tell... I got one more arrow in my bow... I got one more shot at the prize...". All songs were recorded on vintage equipment creating the illusion you're listening to an old Cliff album. 'Rebirth' wins this year's Grammy for best reggae album or yours truly will eat his shoes; Ivan is back!
