The music of Kasai Allstars is somewhere akin to that of Konono N°1, but in yours truly's humble opinion, the use of the likembe (thumb piano) is just about all both bands have in common. Konono N°1 is the retro-futuristic project from the brain of old genius Mawangu Mingiedi, when Kasai Allstars rather offers a folkloristic musical pallet of the Kasaï region in The Congo. Musicians from no less than six groups and as many ethnicities were united and using instruments like the likembe, lokole and traditional xylophones, take the listener on an hour long trip to the heart of The Congo. Forget soukous and rumba, this is fascinating trance inducing Congolese folk music as it was already being played before the arrival of the white man, who, ironically enough, now brought it back from oblivion (for which Vincent Kenis deserves our gratitude)!
