The latest Pressure Sounds release takes us back to May 1982, when a British Channel 4 film descended in the studio of King Tubby in Kingston to make some recordings for the documentary series Deep Roots Music '. At the location they were greeted by resident sound engineer Prince Jammy and producer Bunny Lee. For the occasion, the latter also invited some of his best vocalists like Johnny Clarke, Jackie Edwards and Prince Jammy's new protégé Wayne Smith. Also present was veteran Delroy Wilson who had just finished recording his 'Go Away Drream' album for Bunny Lee. Bad luck for the vinyl collectors among you, because if you purchase a CD copy of 'Dubbing In The Backyard', this delicious lovers rock classic featuring, among others,, excellent covers of soul classics like Rose Royce's 'Golden Touch' or title track 'Go Away Dream', originally recorded by The Chi-Lites, or the great 'I Want To Love You', a version of Dennis Brown's 'Silhouette'. But the main focus of this Pressure Sounds-reissue remains the dub album 'Dubbing In The Backyard', with the track list, apart from dub versions of three songs from 'Go Away Dream' ('Hot Weather' is a dub of 'Golden Touch', 'Mountain Rain' of 'I Want To Love You' and 'Plantation Run' of 'No More Heartaches'), versions of tracks by, among others, Cornel Campbell ('Relaxing Mood' is a dub version of 'Boxing') , Jackie Edwards, Don Carlos (opener 'Adventure' is a dub of 'Spread Out') and Johnny Clarke. The line-up of The Aggrovators referred to on the cover of 'Dubbing In The Backyard', in reality was made up of musicians from the High Times Band: Basil 'Benbow' Creary and Carlton 'Santa' Davis on drums, Chris Meredith on bass and Earl 'Chinna' Smith on guitar. In the United Kingdom both albums were distributed by Starlight Music in Harlesden, a fact that's nicely reflected in the cover photo's: the photo of 'Dubbing In The Backyard' shows Bunny Lee along with Starlight-boss Desmond Bryan and his brother Benup, and on the cover photo for 'Go Away Dream', which was taken in front of the Starlight Records shop, you'll see Delroy sitting on the hood of a parked car. Or what happens when you put the king, the prince and the gorgon together!
