Kobo Town, a band around Trinidadian-Canadian Drew Gonsalves, has to be one of the world music revelations for 2013. Gonsalves succeeds in catapulting calypso into the twenty-first century in a genius way. The name of the band refers to the neighborhood in Port-of-Spain where calypso originated in the beginning of the last century. The 'jumbie' in the title of the album is an evil spirit taking different shapes and forms in Caribbean folklore. Gonsalves prefers not to describe his music as calypso: "It is calypso inspired and derived, but it's a departure from the way it developed back home. It's hard to pin down pure calypso. For me the calypsonian is a singing newspaperman commenting on the events of the day, with an attitude halfway between court jester and griot.". We couldn't have summarized it better ourselves!
