Le Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo might well be one of the best kept musical secrets from West Africa. The band, partly named after Poly Disco, a record store where they performed their first gigs, was founded somewhere in the nineteen sixties, but never really got outside of Benin much. 'Cotonou Club', their first album release in about twenty years, now has to change that. The album was recorded in Paris and features duets with Beninese superstar Angelique Kidjo and new Malian talent Fatoumata Diawara. Even more surprising is 'Lion Is Burning', for which the band collaborated with Glaswegian band Franz Ferdinand. The vodun-soaked (see album art) afro-funk of Le Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo has a catching groove and yours truly is already reserving 'Cotonou Club' a place in the world music top 3 of 2011! James Brown is alive and kicking and residing in Benin!
