Lee Perry may have burnt down his Black Ark studio in 1980, apparently not all that much material was lost. For the seventh time (if we counted correctly) Pressure Sounds has put a compilation together with production work by The Upsetter. The twenty tracks on 'The Sound Doctor' all date from the early period of the Black Ark. Why should you purchase yet another Lee Perry compilation? Well, real Perry fans will probably do that for the few rarities on 'The Sound Doctor' they don't already own, tracks like 'Army Of Love' for example, a never released song by Jr. Byles or 'Message To The Nation' by a certain Tony Fearon (in fact just an early Clinton Fearon). For riddim fanatics 'The Sound Doctor' contains a whole series of tracks on the Pressure And Slide riddim, best known from Sugar Minott's 'Oh Mr. D.C.' but originally by The Tennors. Because the sound quality of the tracks on 'The Sound Doctor' is not always of the same standard, this album will mostly appeal to hardcore fans of the Black Ark sound.
