'Che Guava's Rickshaw Diaries', the second album by London collective Lokkhi Terra, is one of the best and most original releases we heard this year. This band around pianist Kishon Khan plays world music in the literal sense of the word, music in which rhythms from Bangladesh surreptitiously blend into Cuban Santeria-music ('Shoki Kunjo Shajao') or in which Jamaican ska is mixed with lyrics in Bengali ('Tomi Eshechile Porshu'). The voices of Sohini Alam, Aneire Khan and Aanon Siddiqua reminded yours truly of the work of Susheela Raman. Album title 'Che Guava's Rickshaw Diaries' is, of course, a nod to the book 'The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes On A Latin American Journey' by Che Guevara and summarizes the ideological vision of the band somewhat. Absolute must!
