Introducing Mokoomba, six young musicians from Zimbabwe and winners of the Music Crossroads International Festival in 2008. For this debut album, recorded between Abidjan and Harare, the band joined hands with Brussels based Manou Gallo, a collaboration that, judging from Mokoomba's funky use of the bass, was written in the stars. The members of Mokoomba all hail from the Zimbabwe-Zambia border area, a region home to the Tonga and the location where the mighty Zambezi plummets into a chasm creating Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya. Mokoomba describe their music as a mix of Afro-fusion and traditional Tonga-rhythms, but for yours truly, this is above all else a fresh African sound from a country that didn't have much positive news to report over the past decades.
