When Jim Jarmusch decided to use the music of Mulatu Astatke for his film 'Broken Flowers' back in 2005, he inadvertently reignited the career of this veteran Ethiopian musician. The renewed interest for the work of Astatke has now finally also resulted in Strut Records compiling this career overview. The discography of Astatke, Ethiopian jazz pioneer and inventor of his very own music genre, Ethio-jazz, is extensive and on Ebay his vinyl records are genuine collectibles, but on CD Mulatu's music was rather harder to find. 'New York + Addis + London, The Story Of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975' counts 20 tracks and provides an overview of the long career of Mulatu: from his first recordings in London in the mid-sixties over his work for the small Worthy label in New York to his time in the swinging Addis of the late 1960s where he recorded numerous albums for labels like Amha, Phillips and Axum. Of course, 'Yegelle Tezeta' and 'Yekermo Sew', made famous by 'Broken Flowers' are also included in the track list.
