Muyei Power ("the power of our nation") or Orchestre Muyei, a popular band from 1970s Sierra Leone, was the brainchild of Abou Bakarr Whyte. Even though in that era mostly genres like palm-wine (also known as maringa), milo-jazz (the Sierra Leonean variant of gumbe) and Congolese rumba were popular in Freetown, with Muyei Power Whyte decided to focus on the indigenous music from the interior of the country. Its mix of traditional songs, which were often still/still often considered untouchable, with Western influences wasn't without its share of controversy in Sierra Leone. From Muyei Power's output not much more than a handful of 12-inch singles survived, the bulk of those, recorded for the Makossa Records label in New York, assembled here for the first time on one album. Vintage Sierra Leonean funk rock vibes!
