Slow Walk Music, the Spanish label that introduced us to Alma Afrobeat Ensemble just recently, now also releases Nakany Kante's. Nakany was born in Siguiri, a town in the northeast of Guinea, the border region with Mali. Stylistically her music, a mix of wassoulou, soukous, m'balax ('Tone Mounfa', a great duet with Michel Ndione), reggae ('Segue?') and afro-pop, reminded us of Salif Keita. Nakany can't boast griot heritage and therefor faced an uphill struggle to make her dream of become a singer a reality. In 2007 she met Daniel Aguilar, fell in love, married him and followed her husband home to Barcelona. Loosely translated from Malinke, saramaya means something like "success" or "victory" (see also: Habib Koité's eponymous song) and is of course a reference to the many hurdles Nakany had to take to get where she wanted to get. Impressive debut by an eager young African talent you should certainly keep an eye on.
