Neco Novellas, born Anselmo João Johanhane, is a descendant from a musical family from Mozambique. His brothers Nelson and Isildo play guitar, percussion and bass on 'New Dawn' and his sisters Cidalia and Isabel took care of the backing vocals. Neco left the African continent at an early age to study jazz in Portugal (the former colonial power in Mozambique). He refuses resolutely to restrict his music to one genre and 'New Dawn/Ku Khata' is an album that one moment is reminiscent of Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo's cooperation at the time of the 'Graceland' album ('Ku Khata', 'Phumela'), then, with the help of Zuco 103's Lilian Vieira sounds Brazilian for a second ('Vermelha') and finally even nears the work of Sting from the early nineteen nineties ('O Sol').
