Nicodrum (born Nicolas Belouet), is a French percussionist from the vicinity of Paris, who, in recent years, focused his attention on the repeater (or keteh) and Jamaican nyahbinghi and burru rhythms in particular; something for which he consulted grandmaster Noel 'Skully' Simms. If, like yours truly, you're curious who the "friends" with whom Nicodrum recorded this album are, we can tell you it was a range of musicians from the French reggae scene including Bost & Bim, saxophonist Guillaume 'Steppa' Briard and keyboardist Jimmy (both active with Homegrown Band), guitarist Seb and trumpeter Alex of Tu Shung Peng and guitarist Kubix. Albums that are built entirely around one instrument have become a rarity, making 'Back To Fundehchan' (a nod to the funde, next to the repeater and thunder or bass drum, the third drum in the nyahbinghi tradition) a real instrumental gem featuring songs that range from jazz ('Reggae Is My Jazz') over nyahbinghi ('Méditation', title track 'Back To Fundehchan') to dub and even South African township jive (opener 'Rainy Days').
