With 'Coba Coba', the new album by Afro-Peruvian sensation Afrolima, the Cumbancha label, signs for one of the strongest world music albums of 2008. Novalima is the story of four school friends (Ramon Perez-Prieto, Grimaldo del Solar, Rafael Morales and Carlos Li Carrillo) and their search for a sound in which they could unite their passion for traditional Afro-Peruvian music (a legacy of the Spanish slavery system) and contemporary dance culture. That sound is an eclectic mix of dub, reggae and electronics larded with vocals borrowed from Latin music and imploring cajón-percussion. Novalima is already hugely popular in Peru and will hopefully soon be one of the revelations at the summer festivals!
