German label Out Here Records this time ventured into Kenya where they bumped into rapper Octopizzo (not the label's first visit to the East African country, as for the 2011 compilation, 'BLNRB, Welcome To The Madhouse' they already visited Nairobi). For Octopizzo (born Henry Ohanga) it's all about "number eight": his mother told him that as a baby he only opened his eyes eight days after he was born, his favorite animal is the octopus, the "h" is the eighth letter of the alphabet and stands for hip-hop as well as for Henry and finally, it's also the number of the matatu minibus running from Nairobi city centre to Kibera, the slum where Octopizzo grew up. The guest list of the album features a lot of names that, with the exception of Kenyan Muthoni The Drummer Queen (whom we still remembered from her cooperation with Fredy Massamba), didn't immediately sound familiar (Sage Chemutai, Amina, Octopizzo's daughter Tracy, Antoneosoul, Kayvo-Kforce). Octopizzo smoothly alternates between English and Swahili, but apart from that 'Chocolate City' (a reference to Kibera, where both the dirt roads and the rusted corrugated iron roofs have a chocolate tone) might just as well have been a US release; for amateurs of hip-hop undoubtedly an additional argument to purchase this album, but less so for world music lovers.
