Sublime Frequencies, the American label that already introduced us to Omar Souleyman, this time dusted off the work of Omar Khorshid. This far too early departed (Khorshid died under suspicious circumstances at the age of thirty-six) Egyptian guitarist in the nineteen sixties and seventies was just about single-handedly responsible for the introduction of the electric guitar in Arabic music. Even though he's still virtually unknown in the West, in the Arab world Korshid has an almost iconic status. Omar was especially popular in Lebanon, in pre-civil war Beirut, then still enjoying a reputation as the Paris of the East. Omar's music sounds like a psychedelic trip through the Middle East, with Korshid perfectly managing to integrate the Western sound of the electric guitar in the oriental tradition. Absolute discovery!
