OqueStrada (the name is a contraction of the Portuguese "orquestra", orchestra, and "estrada" or street) represents a new generation of Portuguese artists (see also Deolinda), a generation with one foot still firmly rooted in fado-tradition, but by no means restricted by the limitations of the genre. With 'AtlanticBeat Mad'in Portugal' the trio Marta Miranda (vocals), Pablo (washtub-bass) and João Lima (Portuguese guitar) are more than ever looking beyond Portugal's borders for inspiration. Even though the innovativeness of their debut effort 'TascaBeat, O Sonho Português' (JARO Medien, 2010) has worn off, with this second album OqueStrada provide for a worthy successor. Standing out in the track list are title track 'Atlantic Beat', in which Pablo's French parlando provides an extra dimension, and the Brazilian-inspired 'Não Prometo' which has a slight samba vibe going. Only when Marta Miranda switches to English, as in 'Sweet Old Country', we weren't quite convinced. Fado 2.0!
