With the reissue of his legendary 1966 'Super Afro Soul' album Strut Records already revived Orlando Julius' career back in 2000, and the label now also presents 'Jaiyede Afro', a collaboration with London based band The Heliocentrics. Julius is best known for his pioneering work in mixing African rhythms with Western genres like pop, rhythm & blues and soul and lent soul legend Lamont Dozier (best known as one-third of Holland-Dozier-Holland, the songwriter and producer trio behind countless Motown classics) a hand in composing 'Going Back To My Roots' (a huge 1981 hit for Odyssey). From his experiments in the nineteen sixties and seventies, few remains on 'Jaiyede Afro' and instead we're offered prime afro-funk and afrobeat. Title track 'Jaiyede Afro' is actually a song Orlando still remembered from his childhood days, when his mother took him to women's meetings with lots of singing and drumming going on. The same goes for 'Omo Oba Blues', a traditional song Julius was taught while still in school and which he already recorded a first time in 1965 with his Modern Aces Band. Instant classic!
