Owiny Sigoma Band is a joint project of five musicians from London (Jesse Hackett/keyboard, Louis Hackett/bass, Sam Lewis/guitar, Chris Morphitis/bouzouki + guitar and Tom Skinner/drums) and a number of Kenyan musicians from the Luo tribe (Joseph Nyamungu/nyattiti and Charles Owoko/percussion). Together they provide an unusual but catchy sound dominated by rhythmic percussion and the sound of the nyattiti (Kenyan lyre). The five Londoners were influenced by artists like Fela Kuti, Oumou Sangare or Thomas Mapfumo of which echoes can be found on the album. The project also got Damon Albarn's blessing as he took care of the organ arrangements on 'Odera Lwar' and 'Margaret Okudo (Dub)'.
