Time for some mea culpa! 'Movement', Rootz Underground's debut album had escaped yours truly's attention. Wrongly so as it turns out, because succesor 'Gravity' is a great album. Rootz Underground clearly draws from the same source as bands like SOJA or Rebelution (roots reggae with a good dash of rock), the only difference with those US bands being that Rootz Underground is Jamaican. On their website the band defines its sound as follows: "Kick down the walls, burn the paper the rules are written on and mash down the "box" that limits a sound to a single genre!". The voice of lead-vocalist Stevie G is somewhat reminiscent of that of the Marley brothers and in the content of their songs the band shows a clear preference for classic roots themes. Recommended listening!
