Like Tom Fire, Sanguebom ("good blood" in Portuguese) is also a do-it-yourselfer from the French capital. In his music Sanguebom flirts with genres like hip-hop, reggae, soul, rock, dub and trip-hop; and the tracks on 'BlackStarLine' were inspired by a car trip he made from Paris to Dakar. Opener 'A Free-K' featuring Rochelove Dhayvàä (who also pops up on 'Vodun') is somewhat reminiscent of Manu Chao. 'Baifale' is a fun hip-hop/reggae track with Senegalese rapper Abass Abass providing lyrics in Wolof. For three of the more soulful songs in the track list Sanguebom invited Ivorian-Tunisian Laetitia Dana, a promising Parisian soulstress. Instrumental 'Motel El Queso' reminded yours truly of the work of Deep Forest. New Yorker Jamalski signed up for two songs on 'BlackStarLine': 'Resistencia Dub' and 'Metroblaster' are two UK dub tracks with upbeat hip-hop lyrics. 'Samurai' continues along the same lines this time with Jahguidi providing the vocals and 'Bigodinho' is a dubby ode to capoeira-master Mestre Bigodinho who passed away last year. As icing on the cake, we can still add the album was mixed by Mad Professor and his son Joe Ariwa at their London Ariwa Studio. Fascinating sound trip!
