With 'The Chant' Sizzla wants to show us his musical roots as his bond with producer Everton Moore aka Caveman goes back to the time when Miguel Collins was still in school. The result is a pretty solid Sizzla album; old-school Sizzla as we like him best, though that doesn't mean there aren't any stinkers in the track list ('Look What's Happening', 'Smoke Marijuana'). Sizzla's connection with Zimbabwe is also amply highlighted: aside from an ode to the country, 'Zimbabwe' warns us the fight against colonialism is far from over, and 'How Come' is a song he recorded with Zimbabwean artist Jah Seed. 'Zimbabwe' is of course also a nod to the Bob Marley classic of the same title and that is not the only Marley reference on this album: both for 'Put Away The Weapons' and 'System Crash', Sizzla used riddims from the king of reggae (Soul Rebel and Rat Race).
