Skarra Mucci (born Calvin Davis) is one of those Jamaican musicians who haven't been able to distinguish themselves in their home country, but have managed to build a nice career in Europe. The fact Skarra Mucci is in no way short of self-confidence is illustrated by nicknames like 'lyric millionaire' or 'dancehall president' and now also by the title of this new album and the cover illustration depicting Skarra Mucci as King Kong climbing the Empire State Building (and, in the same vain, portrayed as the Hulk on the back of the album). 'Greater Than Great' opens with the eponymous title track over a riddim that seems to stem from the digital era of the nineteen eighties. 'Impossible' is clearly a tribute to Toots & The Maytals/Sista Nancy's 'Bam Bam' and 'Boxing', a version of Cornel Campbell's eponymous classic, is of the same order. Riddim fanatics will enjoy 'Bomboklat', a combination with Perfect over the Stop That Sound riddim, an Irie Ites Records production and a revamp of the classic Stop That Train riddim, and 'Forward Ina Di Dance' on a revisited version of the Swing Easy riddim. Of a very different order is 'Love Train', a cheerful reggae tune for which Skarra is supported by a certain Alex. The dubstep influenced 'Red' is a bit heavy on the stomach, but doesn't linger as it's immediately followed by the great 'My Sound', a song over 'After The Laughter (Comes Tears)', a Stax soul classic by Wendy René. Varied and extremely successful album.
