African back-to-basics bands fiddling around with self-made instruments are seemingly becoming a trend. First there were Congo's Konono N° 1 and Staff Benda Bilili, followed by Tanzania's Jagwa Music and Malawi's Malawi Mouse Boys and now there's Sotho Sounds, a group of shepherds from the Kingdom of Lesotho who started fabricating instruments (pewter guitars, metal one snared violins and a drum kit made out of empty oil barrels) so they could kill the boredom by playing music together. The members of Sotho Sounds look somewhat like an African version of George Clinton's Parliament, but musically draw inspiration from the music traditions of the Basotho and the South African pop of Brenda Fassie, resulting in a sound that will undoubtedly create fireworks on stage, but on record sounds just a little less palatable.
