It had been a while since we last heard from the Strut Records label, but now there's 'Ave Africa', an anthology of the work of Tanzanian band Sunburst. Sunburst was founded by Congolese guitarist Hembi Flory Congo in Dar es Salaam back in 1970. The repertoire of the band was initially comprised of covers of soul and funk hits, but when Julius Nyerere introduced his Ujamaa concept, these genres were banned, so Sunburst developed a style of their own they called kitoto sound (also the title of the first track on this compilation). Frustrated by the meager revenues they were able to generate with their music, the band members decided to call it quits in 1976. This double compilation album, compiled by Thomas Gesthuizen (DJ Gioumanne) and Dave Tinning, comprises just about Sunburst's entire output, including the singles they recorded for labels like Moto Moto and TFC, the 1976 'Ave Africa' album and a forgotten radio session from 1973.
