When we first got our hands on 'The Alaev Family & Tamir Muskat', we couldn't shake the image of The Kelly Family. Pater familias Allo Alaev specialized in playing the doyra, a percussion instrument of which he sometimes uses nine at a time. The Alaev Family is a known exponent of the Jewish music traditions of Bukhara, a trade city on the Silk Road in the southwest of Uzbekistan where most of the population, like the Alaev's, is of Tajik descent. If we're fair though, we must admit it was their collaboration with producer Tamir Muskat (Balkan Beat Box) that drew us to the album of this seven-headed family orchestra.
