For 'Apikorsim/Heretics' The Klezmatics got back to basics. Stronger even, this is the New York based band's first album not including any guests be it vocal or instrumental. Of course The Klezmatics didn't haphazardly choose the title of the album; the band is sometimes described as The Clash among klezmer bands and lyrically have never shied away from controversy. That's no different on 'Apikorsim/Heretics' on which the lyrics of the title track (in which they argue that infidels much more fun than zealots) and 'Vi long? (How Long?)', an adaptation of a revolutionary poem of the Jewish-Russian-American anarchist poet David Edelstadt, especially caught our ear. As usual the songs on 'Apikorsim/Heretics' are sung in Yiddish, so if you're not fluent in that language, it might be a good idea to consult the liner notes. Thirty years after they played their first notes in New York's East Village, The Klezmatics are still just about the hippest cats in klezmer!
