It seems to rain afrobeat projects these days; from all over the world we continue to get releases and curiously enough there's hardly ever a bad one between them. Take the self-titled debut of The Liberators all the way from Sydney in Australia for example; they call themselves an afro-funk formation, but in fact this is just a finger-licking good afrobeat album. For the right vocal sound the ten piece band called on Jojo Kuo (Fela Kuti/Antibalas), Roxie Ray, whose voice is reminiscent of that of Amy Winehouse ('Let It Go') and Afro Moses, but most of the tracks are instrumentals. The fact colleagues like Gilles Peterson and Amayo (Antibalas) also dig the music of The Liberators can only be considered an additional recommendation. Damn good album!
