A true music fanatic is always on the lookout for that one album that literally gives him goose bumps. 'The Prester John Sessions' by Gogol Bordello bass player Tommy T definitely fits that description. On this album Tommy mixes Ethio-jazz with reggae and dub (see also Dub Colossus). The name of the album refers to the legend of the mythical Christian King Prester John, about whom, just like about Ethiopian music today, little was known in the West. The backbone of 'The Prester John Sessions' is the, at times brilliant, instrumentation (Setegne Satenaw's masinko, the saxophones of Andrea Fabbri and David Frank), with the voices of Gigi and Abdi Nuressa giving the songs the authenticity they need. The only track on the album that feels a bit misplaced is 'Lifers' (for which Tommy invited his colleagues of Gogol Bordello). Already one of the albums of 2010!
