"Without Tony Allen, there'd be no afrobeat." is a quote by the late Fela Kuti and who are we to contradict him? 'Secret Agent' is Tony Allen's first album for the renowned World Circuit label and the result is an old-school self-produced afrobeat album with a jazzy undertone. The only out-of-place instrument we noticed was Fixi's (keyboardist and accordionist with French band Java) accordion. For the vocals on 'Secret Agent' Tony called on a whole host of compatriots (King Odudu, Switch, Wura Samba...), but it are the voices of Kefee Obareki and Ayo that are a real breath of fresh air in the otherwise male-dominated afrobeat scene.
