In Nigeria's rich musical history, Tunyi Oyelana is a bit of a misfit. As a pupil of writer and Nobel Prize laureate Wole Soyinka, Oyelana was active as an academic, actor and musician. Together with his backing band The Benders (so called because they were able to play so many different styles), Tunyi performed a mix of Nigerian genres like juju, afrobeat and highlife with funk, calypso, afro-rock and reggae and all that material supplied the Soundway Records label with more than enough music to compile a firmly grooving double compilation album!
