The music of Inner-Mongolian singer Urna, forced yours truly to venture somewhat outside his comfort zone. With Tuvan throat singing as made famous by Huun-Huur-Tu, Urna's music has nothing to do. The classically trained vocalist was born in Ordos (thanks to its subsoil, rich in ore, Ordos is one of the wealthiest areas in China, but the city itself is known as a modern ghost town, where millions were invested in the most prestigious projects, but to date almost no one lives) and initially focused on playing the yangqin (the Chinese version of the hammered dulcimer) but the urge to use her voice as well proved too big and fortunately so as it turned out Urna had a vocal range of four octaves. 'Portrait' gives an overview of the work from her solo albums and collaborations with Italian saxophonist Luigi Cinque ('Secret'), Hungarian violinist Zoltan Lantos ('Tenggeriin Shivuu'), Iranian percussionists Keyvan and Djamshid Chemirani ('Sanaaljal') and Polish klezmer band Kroke ('Sangjidorji'). Ethereal experience close to classical music.
