Just when you think the end is near for physical album releases, a little gem pops out of nowhere, proving there's still light at the end of the tunnel. All that just to say we truly enjoyed 'A Search For CMS'. The 14 tracks for this album were carefully selected by Ziya Ertekin aka Blue Flamingo (who, in the past, already compiled similar releases about Congolese jazz and his passion, 78 rpm records). After a long trip through Africa he spent a last day in Nairobi and decided to go in search of CMS (Capitol Music Store), a legendary music store annex record label, he, being a notorious collector of old 78 rpm records, knew all too well. The great thing about 'A Search For CMS' is that this album actually serves as the soundtrack to the 26-page one-day-travel-report Blue Flamingo wrote about his quest. Along with benga (a Kenyan adaptation of Congolese rumba and soukous) you will discover the story of CMS (but also other obscure labels like Melodica Music Store and African Gramophone Store), the store/label that was at the root of the Kenyan music industry. Fascinating release!
