This year, the FIFA World Cup takes place in South Africa and with the compilation 'Ayobaness: The Sound Of South African House' ("ayoba" is an expression to indicate when something is crazy or great) the Outhere label serves up an album that could well be the perfect soundtrack to this event. As the title suggests, this is South African house, dance music from the shebeens which evolved from kwaito in the 1990s. Popular South African deejays like Pastor Mbhobho, DJ Cleo and DJ Clock mix digital beats with contributions of established South African musicians like Hugh Masekela, Moses Molelekwa or Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens singing in local languages like Zulu, Xhosa or Tsonga. The limits of the world music are becoming blurred and a compilation like 'Ayobaness: The Sound Of South African House' proves the genre has come full circle.
