Now Jamaica is debating whether or not to legalize marijuana, the annual 'Hi Grade Ganja Anthems' release on the Greensleeves label suddenly almost sounds like a political pamphlet. This is already the fourth volume in the series and the track list is an alternation of old and new ganja tunes. In that last category 'Smoke The Weed', a duet by weed ambassador par excellence Snoop Lion with Collie Buddz, could of course not be lacking from the track list, but where those new tracks are concerned our preference rather went to 'Ganja Tea' by newcomer Keida (a production by Rory Stone Love in which the young singer proves a ganja tune doesn't always have to be about smoking) and 'Cali Green' by Mighty Mystic, a Jamaican living in Boston, Massachusetts and the younger brother of the former Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. Among the classics on this compilation a few gems can also be found. Songs like 'I Love Marijuana' (Linval Thompson), 'I Man A Grasshopper' (Pablo Moses) or 'Oh Mr. DC' (here in a revamped version for which Sugar Minott was assisted by Fantan Mojah and Military Man) need no further argument, the track list also contains some lesser known but no less interesting classics, tracks like Desi Roots' 'Weed Fields' or Mystic Eyes' 'Bring The Kouchie Come'. One of the better volumes in this series!
