As subtitle 'The Roots Of Subtropical Music In Uruguay 1975-1979' already implies, for 'Macondo Revisitado', Uruguayan deejay Selectorchico (Nandy Cabrera) selected 21 songs from the extensive catalog of the Macondo label. That label was founded in Montevideo somewhere around 1970 by Chilean businessman Luis Onelia, who drew inspiration for the name of his label from the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In the early days Macondo still mainly focused on folk, tango, murga and rock, but from 1975 onwards, partly as a result of the influence of arranger, composer and trumpeter Mario Maldonado, genres like guaracha, guaguanco, porro, merengue, vallenato, cumbia, bomba and plena started to become increasingly popular in Uruguay. Especially Porto Rican plena, a rhythm that turned out to be highly compatible with Afro-Uruguayan candombe, caught on. Discover bands like Conjunto Casino, Las Estrellas De Macondo, Grupo Cubano, Sonora Cienfuegos and many others. Even though between 1973 and 1985 Uruguay was under the rule of a repressive military dictatorship, musically the Uruguayans continued to party on. ¡Disfrútense!
